My dog ate grapes or raisins

Call your vet, an emergency clinic, or ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 now. The AKC says no safe amount of grapes or raisins has been established.

Why it matters

Grapes and raisins can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs. The ASPCA names tartaric acid as the suspected toxin. Not every dog reacts, and nobody can predict which will, so every case is treated as an emergency.

Do this now

  1. Note how many grapes or raisins, and when.
  2. Call your vet or a poison line ((888) 426-4435, or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661).
  3. Don't make your dog vomit at home unless a vet tells you to.

Hidden raisins

Raisin bread, trail mix, cookies, granola and some cereals contain raisins. Currants and sultanas are dried grapes too.
