Food safety. Every "can dogs eat" verdict comes from the American Kennel Club's veterinary nutrition articles or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, linked on each page with the date the source was last updated. We put the advice in our own words and never add claims the sources don't make.
Calories. Calories per serving come from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy). Treat allowances use the World Small Animal Veterinary Association's guide, which says treats should stay under 10% of daily calories.
Chocolate. Doses and chocolate content come from the Merck Veterinary Manual chapter on chocolate toxicosis, written by an ASPCA Animal Poison Control veterinarian.
Daily calories. The food calculator uses the resting energy formula and life-stage factors published by the Pet Nutrition Alliance.
Breeds. Trait scores (1 to 5) are the American Kennel Club's breed ratings, as compiled from AKC breed pages in the TidyTuesday dataset (February 2022). Rankings for 2025 come from the AKC's annual list. Breed photos are freely licensed and credited on each page.
Not veterinary advice. We are a reference, not a vet. If your dog ate something worrying, call your vet or ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435.
