The core vaccines
AAHA's 2022 guidelines list the core vaccines for dogs as distemper, adenovirus type 2, parvovirus, leptospirosis and rabies.
How many visits
AAHA recommends at least three doses of the distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus combination between 6 and 16 weeks of age, 2 to 4 weeks apart. Leptospirosis is two doses 2 to 4 weeks apart, starting at 12 weeks. Rabies is given as your state's law requires.
Optional vaccines
Depending on where you live and what your puppy does, your vet may suggest Bordetella (kennel cough), Lyme disease or canine influenza. Each adds to the cost.
Ways to save
- Shelters often vaccinate before adoption: bring the records.
- Some shelters and pet stores host low-cost vaccine clinics.
Ask for a written estimate
An estimate lists each line, so you can compare two clinics fairly. Ask what is included, what could be added once your dog is under anesthesia or examined, and whether there is a lower-cost option the vet is comfortable with.

How we put this page together
We do not publish estimates. The figures above come only from readers, and we show a typical price once at least five people have reported one. Medical facts are from:
- AAHA, 2022 Canine Vaccination Guidelines: core and noncore vaccines. Checked October 25, 2026.
Prices change by region and clinic, so use these as a guide and ask your vet for an estimate.
